There are 40 million Americans using online dating websites and those users range from young to old.

Today, 27% of young adults report using online dating sites, which is up 10% from 2013, likely due to the influx of dating apps on smartphones.

And the trend shows no signs of slowing with sites becoming ever more specialised.

Online dating has ballooned into a billion-dollar industry and the Internet "may be altering the dynamics and outcome of marriage itself," said the study by U. researchers in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
